Blog design

I find myself slowly getting tired of my actual blog design these days. Looking back at when I actually changed to the current theme it seems to be almost a year ago, so I guess this is a yearly recurring thought. The biggest difference between now and then is that back then I really had it with the design, today that’s not the case yet. I just notice I’m getting ready for a change.

Together with this yearly design question, the self-hosting question pops up as well. I’m not a techie so I like the fact that I don’t need to care about any updates or hosting issues. That said, there are only that many themes you can choose from on WordPress.com and the limitations on adding code for widgets and tracking can be annoying from time to time as well. I understand the balance between the 2 current options you have with WordPress, it’s just that I’m not sure where I should go for today.

What do you think? I could use a bit of help on this one. Should I just leave all as is? Should I stay on WordPress.com and just get a new theme (like I did with my other blog a few weeks ago)? Or have someone do my own design and host the whole thing myself as well? I don’t know, you?

Great question. I originally had your theme, then changed it. I wish I could embed flash or other things on my site…but can’t. I know once you go self-hosted there’s a lot more freedom, especially with plugins. But in the long-run, I suppose the best question to ask is if the additional setup time and involvement is worth what you’re looking for.

There’s a great list of beautiful (and free) themes right here, but I’m afraid most of them are not included in the WP.com themes list …

I like this theme. This is the them that got you nominated for Best Blog Design!

Simple, nice color scheme, and it works well. Keep it.

I still like your design :)

My own blog Copypaste is a selfhosted WordPress blog, but I am always running late implementing updates. I know how to do that stuff, but I just lack the time. In the end, I wish I’d hosted at WordPress.com myself.

Don’t forget, at WordPress.com you can still implement your own design by uploading a modified standard theme as a CSS sheet for a couple of bucks.

In retrospect that looks like best of both worlds to me….

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It’s amazing to see how much response I got here, on Twitter and even via email and IM. I’ll have to think it through a bit more, but I think I’ll probably stick around a bit longer on WP.com – and maybe just change the design a little bit. We’ll see ;)

  6. If you decide to switch to a self host anyway, let me know and I’ll help you out. Once set-up there isn’t much to take care of ..

I go through the same thoughts every now and then. But then I think about the pain of changing (as I am with Typepad I would need to migrate) and just decide to stay where I am. Though I do like to do a little tinkering (which Typepad Pro allows you to do).

I like your blog a lot: i read it for content (not design ..)

Thanks Eamon. Very much appreciate that comment!

After all the comments here and maybe even more on Twitter I decided to stick to this theme for a while, maybe just change the header images one of these days to give it a little fresh look :)
